Literacy Month

Education is a children’s’ right, according to UNICEF. It is the only way children have a chance of working their way out of poverty, to have a better future.

BUT, conflict, disease, famine, flood and disasters and innate poverty, all conspire to prevent millions of children from exercising that right.

is a project designed to give orphans and the children of desperately poor families around the world a ………

……………… ‘Better life through Education’

It is a fact that in many countries, children have to contribute financially to their education and in many ‘state’ schools, a unform is mandatory. Children in poverty and orphans can’t afford either, so enrolment in a school is impossible.

The Literacy Box gives a child the opportunity of an education, through the gift of free school materials, enabling a school to enrol these children and give them hope.

In addition to sending Literacy Boxes, we ring fence the rebate from Gift Aided donations so we can supply text-books to the poorer Community Schools, who cannot afford these items.

Our partnerships with over forty schools give us an illuminating insight into just how well their teachers cope with the horrendous inadequacies in funding, basic school fabric and a lack of general teaching resources, all of which greatly affect their ability to teach. Leaky rooves, open sides to classrooms, little or no classroom furniture and one latrine for 600 pupils and their staff are all examples of the extent of the problems, but from feeling helpless, we can now offer some support

Through the teaching skills and a course developed by of one of our Trustees, we can now give teachers the practical support they need through our ‘Building Hope’ programme and this links very nicely with our core work of ‘Boxes and Books’.

All involved with Literacy in a Box, whether Trustee or volunteer, are committed to help the disadvantaged children and do so with ‘Service above Self’ at the heart of their work. Every penny of every donation goes towards the creation of Literacy Boxes.

We have survived the COVID induced ravages on our finances and are once again beginning to rebuild our legacy. Thousands of orphans and children of poor families have benefitted from our work and the Literacy Box has given them hope for their future.

However, we still need volunteers to enable us to have a future and hope you can help. We would be delighted to hear from individuals who can help us with grant funding enquiries, the creation of awareness through social media and general fundraising, all key for our future..
